Kent Farms

Kent Farms is owned, managed and operated by Amelia and Russell Kent. The farm is headquartered in Clinton, Louisiana, with farm locations scattered in East Feliciana Parish. On our farm, we raise beef cattle, consisting of a cow herd, stocker cattle, replacement heifers, labeled grass-fed beef, and custom graze cattle as well.

While we both grew up in agriculture on our parents’ farms and ranches, we started this farm on our own. In fact, we’d each started farms of our own prior to meeting each other. As our relationship progressed and we were engaged, we signed our first pasture lease together and began combining our farms. That was in 2010, and we’ve been quite fortunate to continue to expand since then.

For the majority of our farm’s existence, our primary focus has been our brood cows. About half of our herd are F1 Braford and Brangus cows, and the rest consists of quarter-blood Brangus and crossbred cows. Each year we market the calf crop our cows raise, and also keep some of the calves for our replacement heifer and grass-fed beef programs. Once we’re finished with shipping the calf crop, we wean the remaining calves and prepare for the fall and winter as the cows rest up for a few months ahead of the next calf crop.

For as long as we’ve had cows, we’ve also kept high quality, broody heifers to breed and become replacement heifers. Originally these heifers were intended solely for our herd, but for the past few years we’ve also been selling these bred heifers.

We integrated direct marketing into our business model in 2012, initially with a pastured, rose veal product marketed directly to chefs at bistro-style restaurants. That model evolved into grass-fed and grass-finished beef marketed directly to the household consumer as custom beef to fill your freezer, which then grew into having a labeled-retail product as well. Our retail marketing focuses on partnering with other farmers who have strong retail demand, but we also sell individual beef cuts from our home.

With our most recent expansions, we’ve added stocker cattle as our newest enterprise for further diversification. We purchase the stocker cattle, administer routine vaccinations and dewormers, and graze those cattle for an extended period of time until we sell them into the next growing cycle. In 2023, Kent Farms was awarded Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association Inaugural Beef Quality Assurance Award for Cow/Calf.

We genuinely care for and about our livestock, for a number of reasons. Yes, our farm is a large part of our livelihood, but more than that, caring for our animals is the right thing to do.
